Green New Deal UK is fighting to Build Back Better

The coronavirus pandemic has turned the world upside down, exposing major weaknesses in our economy and the deep-seated inequalities in our society that mean the most vulnerable people have been hit the hardest. And all the while, the climate crisis continues to worsen, devastating communities across the world.
However, we at Green New Deal UK believe that what we do next could change everything. As the world recovers, we have a chance to reset the clock and build back better than before. We think it’s time for a new deal that protects public services, tackles inequality in our communities, provides secure well-paid jobs and creates a shockproof economy which can fight the climate crisis.
We think now is the time for a Green New Deal. And we’re not the only ones. Recent polling found that only 6% of the British public want the economy to return to the way it was before the pandemic. A huge 94% of the British public are ready for change.
That’s why, since June 2020, Green New Deal UK has been co-ordinating the Build Back Better campaign: the campaign for a coronavirus recovery plan that builds back better. Build Back Better is a collaborative campaign supported by many organisations across the social justice, trade union, climate justice, grassroots organising and public policy sectors. There’s a full list of the organisations involved here.
The campaign is built around 5 key demands
(see the full demands here):
- Secure the health and needs of everyone in the UK now and into the future
- Protect and invest in our public services
- Rebuild society with a transformative Green New Deal
- Invest in people
- Build solidarity and community across borders

We’ve seen through this crisis what can be achieved when we support each other, from doctors coming out of retirement to care for coronavirus patients, to people picking up prescriptions for their neighbours.
Now we need to channel that community spirit into rebuilding our society for the better, by urging the government to provide a new deal that puts people, not profits, first.
